Parent and Child Program

The program will help young children become comfortable in, on and around the water so that when the time comes, they are ready to learn how to swim. Parent and Child Program lays the foundation for the future.

An adult is required to accompany each child in the water and participate in every class. The adult participants learn too! Adults learn how to safely handle their infants or toddlers in, on and around the water, as well as how to become water smart.

PRE -SCHOOL

Beginner

Come with your preschooler to this class, where we introduce parent-child separation with a parent present but out of the water. We will play games and use repetition to learn a variety of fundamental skills such as breath control, bobbing, unassisted streamlines and freestyle basics.

Advanced

Trainers hold national fitness certification and/or degrees in Exercise Science. They are highly knowledgeable fitness coaches and have a firm grasp of strength, cardio and weight reduction programs. Level 1 training are designed for beginner to intermediate level participants.

PREREQUISITES

Child should be able to flutter kick on front and back for 15 yards with proper technique; push off, streamline and kick on front unassisted for 15 yards; freestyle coordination for 10 yards (with or without breathing); tread water for 30 seconds in deep water.

MatchPoint NYC Learn to Swim classes help each child develop stroke technique, stamina and endurance in the water. Beginning with progression from shallow to deep water, our swim curriculum helps children build a strong foundation of technical skills and then work on refining these skills as swimmer progresses, all under competent supervision of our certified instructors.

LEARN TO SWIM

Beginner 1

This course is intended to help participants develop confidence and increase comfort in the water while in a safe environment. Young swimmer who aren’t able to swim continuously will build endurance and good water safety habits. Kids will learn how to immerse their heads under water, blow bubbles, float with support, jump into and get out of the water. They will also focus on freestyle swimming, back kicks with assistance, fundamentals of freestyle and backstroke with support

Beginner 2

Building on the Beginner 1 class, this is the second part of our introductory program for children with limited skills and experience in the water. Kids are introduced to more advanced skills such as treading water for 15 seconds, flutter kick (front and back), and freestyle and backstroke swimming each for 15 yards without support

Intermediate

Instructor permission is required before enrollment. Participants are taught the butterfly and breaststroke as well as advanced swimming techniques to help improve their overall swimming efficiency. Goals of this program include learning proper streamline position for the front and back flutter kick, dolphin kick, and front dive. Participants will also tread water for 1 minute and swim freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke for 25 yards

Advanced

In this course, swimmers build skills and refine all four competitive strokes. This program focuses on techniques such as flip-turns, standing dives, and breaststroke pull-downs. We will also build endurance to swim greater distances to produce accomplished swimmers. Participants must be comfortable

ELITE LEAGUE

This league is composed of the highest-level swimmers (ages 10 and older), who attend practices 2-6 times a week on a regular basis. Participants are exposed to a team-like environment.

This course is designed for swimmer who want to swim more than once a week in order to build endurance and learn competition-specific skills such as team preparation and pace-clock orientation. Participants will focus on training sets of all four competitive sets, as well as raising starts and turns in order to develop the skills needed to join any swim team

SWIM TEAM

Our classes are appropriate for all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. They include individualizes progressions and give you an ability to work at your own pace. Learn the unique relationship between strength, flexibility, muscle tension and recovery.

Tryouts will be held on Thursday, September 5th, 2019.

Schedule:

  • 10U 3:30 PM to 5 PM
  • 11 – 14 years old 5 PM to 6:30 PM
  • 15 and older 6:30 PM to 8 PM

Junior Swim Team: Approximately 8-12 years old

Swimmers must be able to perform all four competitive strokes. Swimmers are expected to average between 3-5 practices per week for 1.5 hours as determined by the coach. Meet competitions are approximately once per month, depending on the season. Group Goal Meets: Zones, Junior Olympics, Silver Championships

Sharks Swim Team: Approximately 10-15 years old

Swimmers must be able to perform all four competitive strokes. Mandatory attendance is 4-6 practices per week for 1hr 45min. Meets are approximately once per month, depending on the season. Tryouts are held on Monday, September 11th, 2017. Group Goal Meets: Zones, Junior Olympics, Silver Championships

Senior Swim Team: Approximately 13 years & older

This is the most intense level and is designed for top skilled athletes preparing to compete at the highest level. Swimmers must be able to balance the commitments required by the MatchPoint NYC Swim Team and their school before considering taking part in this group. Swim meets are approximately once per month, depending on the season. Senior and National group swimmers should swim two practices per day on Tuesday and Friday mornings between 6:00am-8:00am. Practice is 6-8 times per week for 2 hours. Group Goal Meets: Olympic Trials, Senior Nationals, US Open, Sectionals, Senior Meets, Junior Olympics.

ADULT SWIMMING

Adult Swim American Red Cross courses are designed to meet a variety of needs that older teen and adult learners may have. The following courses are available:

Adult Swim—Learning the Basics.

This class teaches basic aquatic skills, swimming strokes and water safety concepts to older teens and adults who are novices.

Adult Swim—Improving Skills and Swimming Strokes.

This class seeks to help older teens and adults improve on existing skills to become more comfortable in the water, to prepare for specific aquatic activities, or both.

Adult Swim—Swimming for Fitness.

This class helps proficient swimmers refine swimming strokes with the goal of participating in a fitness swimming program or competitive event

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

During our swim instructor certification training courses you’ll learn how to help individuals enjoy their time in the water safely – and in a wide range of ways. Throughout the courses we’ll focus on a number of key areas that can help you succeed as aquatics instructor, such as:

  • Water safety at public pools, homes, natural bodies of water and more, including the Circle of Drowning Prevention and Chain of Drowning Survival.
  • Hydrodynamics, including why some things float, resistance to movement and creating movement in water, swimming efficiency and laws of levers.
  • Basic safety, survival and swimming skills to help children gain water competency.
  • Helping people with disabilities and other health conditions enjoy the water safely.
  • Helping people with disabilities and other health conditions enjoy the water safely.
Water Safety Instructors will also learn how to teach:
  • Higher-level swim skills that help prepare people of all ages for any aquatic activity.
  • Stroke mechanics for all competitive strokes as well as starts, turns and headfirst entries

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION

MatchPoint NYC trains their own Lifeguards to ensure the highest quality of service

LIFEGUARDING

Provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over

PREREQUISITES:

  • Minimum age: 15
  • Swim 300 yards continuously
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

To successfully complete the course candidates must attend all training sessions, pass two written tests (80% or higher) and in-water scenarios (completed to the objective). At course completion, candidates will receive a certificate in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR & AED. The certificate is valid for two years, some restrictions apply for New York State.

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Program includes:

  • The latest science in emergency cardiovascular and resuscitative care as well as leading drowning and response research.
  • Efficient extrication techniques to remove passive victims from the water.
  • Efficient, safe water rescue techniques providing options for the variety of aquatic facility types and characteristics.
  • Training in individual response with a strong focus on team response.
  • Timed standards for successful course completion resulting in the creation of strong lifeguards.
  • Course options, such as traditional in-person training or blended learning.
  • Zone testing drills for lifeguards and managers.
  • Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Review course.
  • Training options to meet the needs of aquatic facilities including pools, waterparks, aquatic attractions and non-surf waterfronts.
  • Two-year certification for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

MatchPoint NYC trains their own Water Safety Instructors to ensure the higest quality of service.

This course trains Water Safety Instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Satefy program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress. The courses and presentations include Parent and Child Aquatics Levels 1 and 2, Preschool Aquatics Levels 1-3, Learn to Swim Levels 1-6 (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced), three adult courses as well as the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses and more. To enroll, instructor candidates must be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course and successfully complete the precourse session which includes demonstration of swimming skill at Learn to Swim Level 4 (Intermediate).

Candidates must attend all training sessions, complete four practice-teaching assignments, and submit a written lesson plans.

At course completion, candidates will receive a Water Safety Instructor certificate, which will be valid for two years.
